West Valley, NY case study
West Valley Demonstration Project in western New York was a site for private reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel as part of a program to make this a commercialized enterprise in the 1960s.A
This business venture was set up under a private company called Nuclear Fuel Services Inc., with construction beginning in 1963 and completed in 1966. From 1966–1971, 640 metric tons of fuel from defense and commercial power reactors were reprocessed, more than half of which came from the Hanford nuclear reactor.
