Even though making crack-resistant glass is incredibly important for all applications, a detailed understanding of how fracture toughness is related to the composition and structure of glass is still not well understood. In the paper “Connecting bond switching to fracture toughness of calcium aluminosilicate glasses,”¹ Danish group Johansen et al. studied calcium aluminosilicate glasses to understand how the structure influences hardness, crack resistance, and fracture toughness.
